Golden rules of backgammon

Don’t give your opponent the opportunity to hit your checkers.

Always prefer to have two checkers on four points rather than four checkers on two points.

Leave your isolated checkers out of reach of your opponent’s checkers (more than 7 points away).

...And make it difficult for your opponent to bear off the checkers that you have hit.

...And make it easier to bear off checkers that have been hit by your opponent.

Don’t hit if it leaves you vulnerable to a return hit.
